Tokyo Olympics 2020: Vinesh Phogat is unsure when, if ever, she would return to wrestling after being dissatisfied with her performance at the Tokyo Olympics. Vignesh was the top seed in the Games this year after being taken on a stretcher in Rio. In the quarterfinals, however, she was defeated by Vanesa Kaladzinskaya of Belarus.
-I'm not sure when I'll be back- (to the mat). Perhaps I won't. I believe I would have been better off with a broken leg. I needed to make a change. My body is no longer damaged, but I am completely broken.-
Phogat struggled in the run-up to the Tokyo Olympics 2021 event, contracting COVID-19 twice. She also struggled with mental illness. She also consulted with a psychologist, but she thought the problem was not given enough attention in India.
-We celebrate Simone Biles as she said that I am not mentally prepared to perform at the Olympics and did not do her event,- she said, referring to the American gymnast who skipped most of her Olympic events in Tokyo to focus on her mental health.
-Try just saying that in India. Forget pulling out of wrestling, just try saying that you are not ready.-
WFI has suspended Phogat for indiscipline during the Tokyo Olympics. In three instances, she was charged with indiscipline and given a warning that she had to report back to the WFI by August 16.
