Shreyas Iyer is set to make his Test debut in the first Test against New Zealand at Green Park in Kanpur, which can be called a major announcement. Iyer, who has done quite well in ODIs and T20Is, will be hoping to shine in the whites as well.
In the pre-match press conference, stand-in skipper Ajinkya Rahane confirmed the news.
The absence of many top Indian players in this series should be noted, including Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant, Jasprit Bumrah, and Mohammed Shami.
A few days before the match, KL Rahul became injured and had to withdraw from the match. Virat Kohli, the regular captain, has been rested for the first Test and will play in the next match.
In the absence of Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer will likely bat at number four in Kanpur with so many vacancies in the team. As Kohli won't play in this match, the right-handed batter will almost certainly bat at the number four position unless Rahane is promoted. If that happens, Iyer will bat at number five.
In First-Class cricket, Iyer has been a top performer for his state team Mumbai. He averages 52.18 in the traditional format alongside maintaining a strike rate of 81.54. It will be interesting to see if the 26-year-old player can do the same in national colors.
