Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem have pulled out of Wimbledon, which runs from June 27 to July 10. During his semi-final match against eventual champion Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros, world No. 2 Zverev tore three ligaments in his right ankle. On the 8th of June, Zverev confirmed on social media that he had surgery for the injury. The German has not stated when he will return to the Tour, but he will not have the opportunity to improve on his fourth-round appearances at the All England Club in 2017 and 2021.
Despite being sidelined by the injury, Zverev climbed to No. 2 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on Monday, a career high. In 2022, the German has a 29-10 record, with finals appearances in Montpellier and Madrid.
Dominic Thiem, the former World No. 3, will also be absent from the draw at the year's third Grand Slam in London. The Austrian is 0-6 since returning to the ATP Tour in April following a nine-month layoff due to a wrist injury, and he has decided to forego the grass season in order to reclaim his best form. Thiem's finest Wimbledon performance was a fourth-round appearance in 2017, but the 28-year-old has yet to win a match on the grass in London since.
