Latest Football Result: Argentina cruised to a 3-0 win against Uruguay in a World Cup qualifier, thanks to two goals in the last minutes of the half, one of which was an exceptionally lucky counter from Lionel Messi.
Messi floated a 35-meter pass into the area eight minutes before the interval, but it was missed by both advancing attacker Nicolas Gonzalez and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera, and nevertheless found its way into the net. Six minutes later, Lautaro Martinez swung at a chance on the edge of the box and missed, but the loose ball went into Rodrigo De Paul's path, who made no mistake. Martinez made up for his error 17 minutes into the second half when he converted a low cross from De Paul.
With the win, and Brazil's 0-0 stalemate with Colombia earlier in the day, the margin between first-placed Brazil and second-placed Argentina at the top of the 10-team South American qualification group has shrunk to six points. The top four teams qualify for Qatar directly, while the fifth-placed team competes in an inter-regional playoff, as per the live football updates.
Uruguay was unbeaten in eight games going into Sunday's encounter, finishing fourth in the 10-team standings. Luis Suarez came near three times in the opening half hour, including one powerful strike that came back off the post, as they took the game to their opponents
"We played a great game," Messi said. "Everything worked out perfectly."
"Uruguay wait for you and they generate danger. Once we got the first goal we started to find space and the goals appeared."
Argentina gained in confidence as the game progressed, and Giovani Lo Celso squandered a wonderful opportunity to score when he was around the goalie but took too long to strike a shot that hit the underside of the bar and the goal line before rolling to safety.
After drawing early blood, the home side never looked like losing their undefeated streak, which currently runs at 24 games. In an exciting game with just 15 fouls and no warnings, Uruguay's Edinson Cavani came on in the second half, but Argentina had the better opportunities. Messi came close to adding a second, and replacement Angel Di Maria had two chances to make it four, but Muslera parried both of his goal-bound efforts.
