On February 26, Australia defeated South Africa by 19 runs in the Women's T20 World Cup 2023 championship game to win their sixth T20 World Cup championship.
Australia decided to bat first, and Beth Mooney's unbeaten 74 off 53 helped the team reach a respectable score of 156/6 in their allotted 20 overs at Newlands.
The in-form South African batting lineup didn't find the total to be very challenging, but they crumbled under the strain of the intense match. Tazmin Brits struggled in her knock of 10 off 17, thus opening pair Laura Wolvaardt and Brits were unable to get their team off to a fast start. Marizanne Kapp and captain Sune Luus were also lost, leaving the Proteas at 54/3 after 10.3 overs.
Wolvaardt, on the other hand, persisted in her excellent form and advanced the South African innings. Chloe Tyron provided her with solid assistance as they tallied 55 runs in 35 balls. Woolvaardt was dismissed after making 61 off 48 balls when South Africa needed 45 from 22 balls. No other Proteas batter could hit big under the strain after she was dismissed. They could only manage 137/6, giving Australia a 19-run victory. Australia won the match, giving them the third successive T20 World Cup victories after winning the tournament's first two competitions in 2018 and 2020, respectively. Mooney's big knock earned her the Player of the Match award.
