With four games remaining and a superb 4-2 victory against their city rivals Espanyol, Barcelona won the La Liga title for the first time since 2018–19. By halftime, Barca had a 3-0 lead after Robert Lewandowski's 20th league goal of the year and an additional goal from 19-year-old Alejandro Balde.
Jules Kounde's header made it 4-0 before Lewandowski added the third. Javier Puado and Joselu did help Espanyol cut the deficit down, but they are still struggling and are close to the bottom of the standings. With 12 points still up for grabs, Barcelona has 85 points, 14 more than their nearest competitor Real Madrid.
It is their first La Liga championship both since Xavi was named manager in November 2021 and since club legend Lionel Messi left in August 2021. After suffering their ninth league loss in 11 games, Espanyol is now in danger of being demoted from La Liga for the second time in four seasons. With four games remaining, they are four points from safety.
