The North American nation, led by World No. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime, is now just one tie away from achieving a record first-place finish in the team competition after defeating Italy on Saturday in Malaga.
The Canadians' 2-1 victory in the match was made possible by Auger-Aliassime. In the initial singles match, Lorenzo Sonego defeated Denis Shapovalov in a thrilling 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-4 victory for Italy, but the 22-year-old Auger-Aliassime defeated Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 6-4 for Spain to tie the match.
Later, Canada's captain Frank Dancevic changed his doubles lineup for the championship match, bringing in Auger-Aliassime to team up with Vasek Pospisil in opposition against Matteo Berrettini and Fabio Fognini. The strategy paid off as the Canadians defeated their opponents 7-6(2), 7-5 to go to the championship match against Australia on Sunday.
In 2019, Canada made their first Davis Cup final appearance. When Roberto Bautista Agut and Rafael Nadal defeated Auger-Aliassime and Shapovalov, respectively, they came agonisingly close to giving their nations their first Davis Cup victory.
