On Thursday night, Coco Gauff overcame former No. 1 Naomi Osaka 6-4, 6-4 to move on to the Mubadala Silicon Valley Classic quarterfinals. Gauff's career head-to-head record versus Osaka is now tied at two victories each after the triumph. On Friday, she will take on the No. 2 seed, Paula Badosa.
Gauff won all of her service games against one of the greatest servers on the circuit. For the American in San Jose, the serve has been on. She won 89.3% of the points she served up in her nearly flawless match in the first round against Anhelina Kalinina, her greatest percentage over the previous two years.
This pattern persisted against Osaka, who up until the very end of the match was unable to earn a single break point on the young player's serve. The opening set featured just one serve break between the two players, but Gauff applied pressure in the second set, breaking Osaka twice to take the lead 5-1.
