A US court has recommended that Cristiano Ronaldo's civil rape lawsuit, which dates backs more than a decade, be dismissed. Former model Kathryn Mayorga claims Ronaldo assaulted her in a hotel room in 2009. The Portuguese international has consistently rejected sexual assault claims, maintaining that their contact was voluntary. Prosecutors abandoned the criminal case against the Manchester United attacker two years ago, claiming there was little chance of conviction. Mayorga, on the other hand, who has forfeited her right to secrecy, has filed a legal suit for damages.
Magistrate Judge Daniel Albregts suggested that Ronaldo's petition to dismiss the case be approved in a recommendation submitted on Wednesday.
Albregts, whose proposal will be considered by a different judge who is hearing the case, blamed Mayorga's attorneys for the decision, claiming that they based their argument on private conversations between Ronaldo and his legal team.
"Dismissing Mayorga's case for the inappropriate conduct of her attorney is a harsh result," Albregts wrote.
But "if the court does not grant case-terminating sanctions, (her lawyer's) actions could have far-reaching, dangerous consequences on the legitimacy of the judicial process."
Ronaldo's lawyer Peter Christiansen welcomed the recommendation, as per the latest football news reports.
"We are pleased with the court's detailed review of this matter and its willingness to justly apply the law to the facts and recommend dismissal of the civil case against Mr Ronaldo," he said.
Mayorga's attorneys did not immediately respond to an AFP request for comment.
