MS Dhoni has returned to head the Chennai Super Kings, with Ravindra Jadeja abandoning the job he assumed at the commencement of the Indian Premier League 2022 season.
The defending IPL champions announced the news on Saturday, with Dhoni returning to oversee the organisation he has led since its inception. The 40-year-old has led Chennai to four IPL wins, the most recent of which was in 2021.
A statement issued by CSK read, “Ravindra Jadeja has decided to relinquish captaincy to focus and concentrate more on his game and has requested MS Dhoni to lead CSK. MS Dhoni has accepted to lead CSK in the larger interest and to allow Jadeja to focus on his game.”
CSK were in second-last place on the IPL 2022 points table at the time of the announcement, with only two victories from eight matches.
CSK has had a dismal start to the season under Jadeja, winning only two of their eight games thus far and threatening to miss out on a playoff berth. Jadeja, too, has been out of sorts, hitting just 112 runs at a 22.40 average while picking up just five wickets in eight games and giving runs at an 8.19 per over rate.
Dhoni's debut match as captain will take place in Pune on Sunday, against Kane Williamson's SRH, who are currently in the top half of the table.
