Deepti Sharma created history on Wednesday (February 15) by becoming the first Indian player to record 100 wickets in T20I cricket. In the current ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2023, India vs West Indies match at Newlands, Cape Town, the star off-spinner achieved this feat by taking three wickets against the West Indies.
In order to secure her 100th wicket in the shortest format, the 25-year-old right-arm off-spinner bowled out Afy Fletcher in the final over of the innings. While bowling first in India's second match of the competition, she recorded three for 15 to finish out the Caribbean team for just 118/6. Stafanie Taylor led the West Indies in runs with 42 off 40 while Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar both claimed one wicket.
With her second wicket of the match, Deepti became India's leading wicket-taker in T20Is after dismissing veteran batter Stafanie Taylor. She surpassed Poonam Yadav, a senior leg-spinner with 98 wickets from 72 T20Is. Deepti has reached the 100-wicket mark in just 87 T20I innings at an average of 19.07 and an economy rate of 6.10. She is India's top-ranked bowler in the current ICC T20I chart and ranks second in ICC Women's T20I all-rounder's rankings.
