When he overcame Andrey Rublev 6-4, 6-1 on Wednesday to advance to the Nitto ATP Finals semi-finals in Turin, Novak Djokovic stepped up his pursuit of a record-equaling sixth championship.
The Serbian, who defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in his first Red Group encounter, absorbed Rublev's potent forehand throughout the opening set. He also displayed tremendous agility to hang on to points in the frantic indoor circumstances, frustrating the sixth seed.
The former world number one also used his watertight backhand to control baseline interactions, making only six unforced errors in 68 minutes to secure his 43rd victory of the year. The 35-year-old is currently ahead of Rublev 2-1 in the ATP Head-to-Head series after surpassing the 25-year-old in the prestigious year-end tournament in 2016. Daniil Medvedev will be the opponent for Djokovic's next round-robin encounter on Friday.
