As he resisted a fierce assault from Steve Johnson to advance to the semi-finals in Los Cabos on Thursday night at the Abierto de Tenis Mifel, Felix Auger-Aliassime dropped just one point on first serve. The Canadian won 33 of 34 points, a stunning 97 percent, and was nearly faultless in his opening delivery in his 6-4, 7-6(3) victory.
The second seed lost just two games on serve in the first set after breaking the tie right away in the encounter. Johnson held his ground to force a tie-break despite having seven break points in the second set. One of those break chances was saved by a drop volley that was both courageous and diabolical.
Up until Johnson's two unfortunate forehand blunders gave rise to match point, the tie-break was still on service. With his 17th ace, Auger-Aliassime advanced to his fourth season's final and 18th tour-level semifinal.
