Felix Auger-Aliassime required every bit of his Top 10 expertise to defeat the tenacious Thiago Monteiro on Saturday at the Miami Open presented by Itau, where he was back at his career-high No. 6 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
The Brazilian World No. 81 was defeated by the Canadian 7-6(5), 7-6(8) in a match with no serve breaks. In a dramatic second-set tie-break, Auger-Aliassime blew four match opportunities, but Monteiro missed a volley on his fifth, capping a two-hour, 41-minute victory in front of a boisterous Grandstand audience.
He will next face Francisco Cerundolo of South America, who defeated American fortunate loser Aleksandar Kovacevic 6-4, 6-4.
