In their upcoming two-match Test series against India, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead named his team's spin ability as the most important factor.
Having suffered a loss of 3-0 in the T20I series, the Blackcaps are looking to make an impact in the longer format. In the past, they have not done well on the Asian continent.
The spin trio of Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, and Axar Patel poses a threat on the Indian surfaces, according to Stead. The key will be constantly responding to the change throughout the match.
The dry pitches in the Indian cricket region are known to offer spin right from day one, but quietly before getting faster over time.
"I think whenever you come here and face the likes of Ashwin, Jadeja, Axar Patel, who are world-class spinners in this environment as well. For us it's about being able to adapt quickly to what the surface is telling us and what is right in front of us."
"Sometimes when you start the match, it may not be spinning too much but it does come later on. So having multiple ideas or ways to challenge the bowlers back will be something that will be important to our group."
As part of the second cycle of the World Test Championship, there will be Test matches in Kanpur and Mumbai. In 2018, New Zealand lost 3-0 to India when they toured India for a Test series.
