Latest Football Results: With a 4-0 win over North Macedonia on Monday, Germany sealed their spot in the 2022 World Cup, but Belgium will have to wait until next month as Wales eked out a narrow victory in Estonia.
Hansi Flick's side avenged a 2-1 home setback to Macedonia earlier this year to win their seventh qualifier in a row and build an unassailable eight-point lead in Group J with two games remaining.
"We now have five wins from five this season," Germany coach Hansi Flick told RTL.
"You have to compliment the team on their attitude. Of course, the first half was a bit wild, but we can be happy that we won and qualified."
Germany went into their match in Skopje knowing that they could secure their passage if they won, and Armenia failed to beat Romania, according to the latest football results and scores.
After a goalless first half, Kai Havertz broke the deadlock five minutes after the interval before Chelsea's Werner struck twice in three minutes to clinch the tie for the Germans. His first came on 70 minutes when Thomas Mueller, who had teed up Havertz, flicked the ball into the path of Werner, who crashed the ball past Stole Dimitrievski in the Macedonian goal.
Three minutes later, Werner's effort was deflected by replacement Florian Wirtz past Dimitrievski, giving him his fifth goal in his previous five qualifiers. Jamal Musiala, who is 18 years and 227 days old, scored Germany's first goal in international football, becoming the country's youngest goalscorer since Marius Hiller, who was 17 at the time, scored against Switzerland in 1910.
More significantly, Musiala secured the victory, ensuring that the Germans became the first team to qualify for the 2022 championships other than the hosts Qatar.
The second half of the deal, which ensured Romania's spot in Qatar in 2022, was sealed in Bucharest, where Alexandru Mitrita's goal on 26 minutes earned Romania a 1-0 win over Armenia at home.
Belgians have to wait for Wales!
Kieffer Moore's early goal secured Wales a 1-0 win over Estonia in Tallinn, keeping their hopes of chasing Group E leaders Belgium alive. Belgium was not in play due to their participation in the Nations League finals.
With two games remaining, Wales are five points behind Belgium and may yet clinch first place and automatic qualifying. The Czech Republic triumphed 2-0 in Belarus to keep their hopes of finishing second in the group alive. They have the same number of points as the Welsh, but they have played one more match.
Wales will almost certainly make the playoffs, even if they finish below the Czech Republic, thanks to their victory in their 2020-21 Nations League group.
In Group H, Russia and Croatia have secured themselves a top-two finish, but the top position is still up for grabs.
Igor Diveev and Georgi Dzhikiya scored in the first half to give the Russians a 2-0 lead in Slovenia, and the visitors held on to take the three points despite a goal from Josip Ilicic shortly before halftime.
Russia is two points ahead of Croatia, who required a 71st-minute equaliser from Luka Modric to earn a 2-2 draw against Slovakia at home. When the Russians fly to Croatia on November 14, they will be able to seal their qualifying. The Netherlands trounced Gibraltar 6-0, with Memphis Depay scoring twice.
The Dutch, who did not compete in the 2018 World Cup, are top of Group G, but Burak Yilmaz's 99th-minute penalty in Turkey's 2-1 win in Latvia means they will have to wait until next month to finish in the top two.
Norway is two points behind the Netherlands in the second position after defeating Montenegro 2-0, despite the absence of injured Erling Haaland.
