Yannick Hanfmann reached a new peak on Wednesday at the Mallorca Championships. The German earned his best career victory at the grass-court ATP 250 in Spain's Baleric Islands by defeating top seed and defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Hanfmann put on a rock-solid effort, winning 80% (36/45) of the points behind his first serve, to advance to his first ATP Tour quarterfinal other than a clay court.
Hanfmann broke Tsitsipas' serve to secure the victory in the first game of the match and twice more in the deciding set. The 31-year-old has a 16-9 record for 2023 after breaking the Top 50 of the Pepperstone ATP Rankings on Monday. In May in Madrid, he made it to his first ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinal, winning matches against Andrey Rublev and Taylor Fritz in the Top 10.
Hanfmann, who is playing in his first-ever quarterfinal match in Mallorca, will next face local favourite Feliciano Lopez, who extended his run at the penultimate tournament of his professional career with a 7-6(6), 1-6, 6-3 victory over Jordan Thompson.
