Hubert Hurkacz defeated Nick Kyrgios 7-6(4), 6-7(5), 6-1 on Court Central on Friday in Montreal to advance to his fourth ATP Masters 1000 semi-final. The Australian had been on the offensive all day.
The Pole advanced after one hour and 46 minutes and improved to 31-13 on the season in an exciting match at the National Bank Open Presented by Rogers. He did this by adjusting to the 27-year-rapid old's play on serve and delivering crucial strokes from his own strings.
The Washington champion from the previous week, Kyrgios, entered the match in excellent shape, having won 15 of his previous 16 games, with his lone loss coming to Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. The Australian was unable to match the intensity of the Pole in the third set, which eighth seed Hurkacz won by physically taxing a worn-out Kyrgios and improving his record in decisive sets this year to 11-6.
