Despite hitting a comfortable 82 against South Africa in the U-19 ICC Cricket World Cup opener here, India U-19 skipper Yash Dhull said there was space for growth in his batting and that he did not want to repeat the "mistakes" he made in the match.
India upset the 2014 U-19 CWC champions South Africa by 45 runs in a Group B match at the Providence Stadium on Sunday, with Dhull playing a captain's knock and left-arm spinner Vicky Ostwal collecting a five-wicket haul (IST).
After setting a 233-run target for the Proteas, the four-time winners wiped them out for 187 in 45.4 overs.
Dhull was on his way to a deserving century if it hadn't been for a mix-up with Kaushal Tambe while going for a single. With this innings, the right-hander has now scored three half-centuries in a row, following the 50s against Australia and the West Indies in warm-up matches.
"Yes, that was an excellent start. From here on out, we'll focus on the positives and try to improve match by match "Dhull's 82 came after South African left-arm seamer Aphiwe Mnyanda damaged with the new ball, lowering the four-time champions to 11/2.
Dhull said he wouldn't make the same mistakes in the next game here, maybe pointing to the run-out on 82.
"Yes, I'm pleased with my performance," Dhull said, "but I want to make sure that the mistakes I made in this game are not repeated and taken over into the next game."
He also mentioned how happy he was with the bowlers. "Yes, the bowlers (Vicky Ostwal and Raj Bawa) bowled in sync, which is helpful to the squad in the long run."
