With a 3-0 win over last season's semi-finalists FC Goa at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Margao, Goa on Monday, defending champions Mumbai City FC scored an early marker in the Hero Indian Super League (ISL).
FC Goa striker Angulo opened the scoring in the 33rd minute from the penalty spot before finding the net again three minutes later with a well-taken finish. In the 76th minute, Islander’s substitute Ygor Catatau put the game out of reach.
FC Goa could not recover from that blow before Mumbai struck again through Angulo, who ended up beating Dheeraj Singh in the FC Goa net after being found in space inside the box by Raynier Fernandes in the 36th minute.
After FC Goa lost the ball up the field in the final minute of the first half Mumbai City FC was able to release Raynier through on goal but he smashed it straight against the crossbar.
At the break, the Islanders had a 2-0 lead.
In the 68th minute, Goa almost made up for the loss when Ortiz curled a loose ball at the edge of the box but he missed the post by inches.
Mumbai City FC eventually won the game when Catatau, who was totally unmarked inside the box, headed home a free-kick in the 76th minute after coming on as part of a triple change.
FC Goa couldn't come back as the Islanders kept hold of the ball to start the year with all three points and end their unbeaten run.
The FC Goa faces Jamshedpur FC on Friday, while the Islanders (Mumbai City FC) play Hyderabad FC on Saturday.
