Batting first, the visitors lost half their team for just 15 runs in 11 overs, losing four of their batsmen for single-digit scores and one for a duck. It was a dismal performance by the visitors. If not for Michael Bracewell and Glenn Phillips' 41-run sixth wicket stand, New Zealand may have been bowled out for a score much lower. Phillips made 36 out of 52 while Bracewell made 22 out of 30. Mitchell Santner's crucial 27-run innings helped the Kiwis score 108 runs in 35 overs.
