In Stadio Alberto Picco, Inter Milan unexpectedly suffered a 2-1 defeat to relegation-threatened Spezia in a game decided by three penalties. The son of legendary AC Milan player Paolo Maldini, substitute Daniel Maldini loaned from Milan gave Spezia the lead in the 55th minute after Inter's first-half penalty attempt by Lautaro Martnez was saved.
Romelu Lukaku's penalty kick seven minutes from the end appeared to have given Inter a chance to salvage a point, but M'Bala Nzola scored from another spot-kick. After its first victory over the Nerazzurri, Spezia moved six points above the relegation zone. Even though all three teams still had games this weekend, Inter was only two points clear of Lazio, three points ahead of Roma, and four points ahead of Milan.
Prior to a challenging week, Simone Inzaghi's team will need to quickly recover. Tuesday, it travels to Porto in the Champions League round of 16, defending a 1-0 lead from the first leg. The following weekend in Serie A, it hosts bitter rival Juventus.
