Inter Milan was successful in frustrating their opponents in Portugal while winning the first leg 1-0 at the San Siro. Mehdi Taremi struck the crossbar and then the post in stoppage time for Porto, who also had Brazilian winger Pepe sent off.
As Inter managed to hold on, away goalkeeper Andre Onana also made a number of crucial stops. Pepe, the 40-year-old Portuguese defender who won three Champions League titles with Real Madrid, was absent for second-placed Porto in the Primeira Liga, and midfielder Otavio was suspended following his red card for two bookable offences in the first leg.
The hosts had the majority of the first-half opportunities, but Mateus Uribe's 25-yard shot was stopped by a great save from Onana. Taremi also curled a shot wide, Evanilson's effort was blocked by Federico Dimarco's brilliant sliding challenge, and Stephen Eustaquio failed to connect on an attractive low cross. Inter Milan qualified into the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2011.
