Despite some outstanding performances in 2022, Jannik Sinner had not yet advanced to the ATP Tour's semifinals this year. At the Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag on Friday, the Italian fixed that issue.
In the ATP 250 clay-court event, the second seed withstood a challenging challenge from Roberto Carballes Baena to win 6-4, 7-6(5) and advance to the round of four. After failing to serve out the match at 6-5 against the valiantly persistent World No. 86 Carballes Baena, Sinner maintained his composure in the second set tie-break.
Sinner's quarterfinal game with Carballes Baena on Friday was their ninth of the year.
With his victory in two hours and 18 minutes, the Italian closed the gap on his first ATP Tour championship since Antwerp in October to only two victories. Sinner will take on countryman Franco Agamenone in the semi-finals in Umag.
