Lorient defeated Rennes 2-1 on Friday in the French league, demonstrating that it can win without its leading scorer Terem Moffi. With 12 goals, Moffi is one goal behind Kylian Mbappé of Paris Saint-Germain for second place on the Ligue 1 scoring list. Nigerian striker Moffi has missed the last two matches after being linked with a transfer to Marseille or Nice before the transfer market closes in January.
Lorient took the lead in the 13th minute on a goal from defender Montassar Talbi, and in the 31st, midfielder Théo Le Bris scored a beautiful goal to make it 2-0. Flavien Tait scored one for Rennes. Rennes had defeated league-leader PSG in the previous round but the final result this time was a comfortable victory for Lorient.
The victory put Lorient up to sixth place and two points behind fifth-placed Rennes due to Rennes losing ground in the race for fourth and a position in the Champions League qualification stages as of now.
