Manchester United overcame a goal deficit to defeat Fulham with nine men and go to the FA Cup semifinals with this victory at Old Trafford. When a handball incident occurred 15 minutes from final whistle, Marco Silva's team's hopes of reaching the final four for the first time since they fell to West Ham in the 1975 final were dashed. Jadon Sancho appeared to be putting the game back on even ground until Willian charged across and cleared the ball.
Despite Willian's protests and manager Silva's rage, VAR told referee Chris Kavanagh to review the pitchside monitor after initially awarding a corner. Before Kavanagh could make a choice, Silva was sent off. When he did, Willian was also shown the red. Aleksander Mitrovic, who had given Fulham the lead, then aggressively remonstrated with the referee while pushing his arm, becoming the third visitor to be dismissed.
When everything was back to normal, Bruno Fernandes buried the penalty. Fulham had lost two players, their manager, and the lead in only two minutes. Two minutes later, Marcel Sabitzer converted a cross from Luke Shaw to make it 2-1 for United, and Fernandes added a third in stoppage time to eliminate Fulham from the FA Cup. At Wembley, United will now take on Brighton in the semifinal. Silva didn't appear to be taking the setback well, as he was seen furiously pacing up and down the tunnel.
