The match between Lyon and Marseille in Ligue 1 was called off on Sunday when Dimitri Payet was struck in the head by a water bottle thrown from the seating.
Referee Ruddy Buquet sent both sides to the dressing room after Marseille forward Payet went to the ground in the fifth minute of the Ligue 1 encounter at Lyon's Groupama Stadium.
The match was suspended for about two hours before it was declared that it would not be resumed.
Payet, a France international, was preparing to take a corner when he was struck by the object, and he was forced to leave the field with an ice pack on his head.
The game would restart, according to the initial stadium statement, but the game would be abandoned if there was another incident.
Lyon's players had returned to the pitch to warm-up ahead of the planned restart, while Marseille's players had stayed in their changing room until the match was finally called off.
"Our apologies," Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas stated, adding that "the offender was quickly reported and captured." He added: "The referee summoned everyone a second time to announce that he had changed his mind," added Aulas.
