The World No. 3 defeated Alexander Zverev 6-2, 7-6(3) on Tuesday to record his third victory in this year's ATP Masters 1000 after going 0-3 at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia prior to this year.
The fourth-round encounter featured the 15th iteration of one of the most captivating ATP Head2Head battles on Tour, as Medvedev made it nine victories to Zverev's six with a signature display of dogged baseline retrieving to fend off the big-serving challenge of the 2017 Rome champion.
Despite Zverev recovering a break to force a tie-break in the second set, Medvedev played a masterful tie-break to seal a one-hour, 56-minute victory, his third of the season against the German. Qualifier Yannick Hanfmann, who earlier defeated Monte-Carlo champion Andrey Rublev 6-2, 7-6(3), will be the 27-year-old's quarterfinal opponent in Rome.
