A clinical Real Madrid defeated Atletico 2-1 on Sunday at the Metropolitano to maintain its unblemished start to the LaLiga season. Rodrygo and Federico Valverde's goals gave Carlo Ancelotti's team a comfortable lead despite playing second fiddle for significant portions of the first half.
The home team's Mario Hermoso scored a goal late on, but it was unable to get an equaliser. Despite a strong start and chances for Diego Simeone's team through defender Felipe and Yannick Carrasco, they fell behind on 18 minutes when Rodrygo decisively converted the visitors' first shot on goal.
The following time Real had an attempt at goal; Valverde scored from close range after Vinicius' shot had hit the post and rebounded. Seven minutes from time, Atletico created a thrilling climax with a header from substitute Hermoso, but Real held on to win the match after the defender was dismissed for a second bookable offence. With a win, Real re-joins Barcelona at the top of the LaLiga standings with 18 points after six games. Atletico sits eight points behind its neighbour in eighth place.
