Due to a hamstring injury, India's limited-overs captain Rohit Sharma missed the series against South Africa, but the latest reports around him are all hopeful. Sharma is said to be close to being totally fit and might play in a six-match limited-overs series against the West Indies. Rohit, who was promoted to full-time limited-overs captain and India's deputy in whites, was injured during the net practice in the SA series.
Injuries have been a long-time friend of the Mumbai batsman, and he has missed a number of games as a result of them. According to BCCI rules, every player must pass fitness testing at NCA before being allowed to play. After this fitness test, the selection committee learns about their availability.
"Rohit's recovery at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) is doing well. He should be able to play in the West Indies series. The first One-Day International (ODI) is scheduled for February 6 in Ahmedabad, according to a BCCI source.
With Virat Kohli stepping down as India's Test captain, it's even more important for Rohit to keep in shape for the upcoming series. The BCCI is now considering its next plan for guiding India in blue. Though KL Rahul may be a better option in terms of future prospects and age, Rohit Sharma's performances in all forms have been excellent. In the future, he might be in line to become India's captain in all three formats. For the time being, KL will lead the men in blue in ODIs against South Africa.
"Rohit Sharma should work as a bridge till the BCCI is convinced that the next young India captain is capable of leading the team for at least five years." This ICC World Test Championship cycle, a senior BCCI official said, "should be about giving it to an experienced hand rather than someone whose leadership qualifications aren't proof enough."
