In his debut match at Roland Garros on Tuesday, Holger Rune upset American Christopher Eubanks 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-2, showcasing his talent on clay courts. The 20-year-old Danish player faced tough competition in the first three sets against Eubanks, but he broke free in the fourth to win after two hours and fifty minutes.
The American attacked head-on and moved forward whenever there was a chance to push Rune aside. The sixth seed remained strong and secured his 28th victory of the year despite the strain. When Rune made it to the last eight in his tournament debut in Paris in 2022, he became the first Danish male to do it.
The sixth seed enters this year's clay-court major in excellent form after winning in Munich and making it to the ATP Masters 1000 finals in Monte-Carlo and Rome. In the second round, Rune—who is 14-3 this year on clay—will play either Gael Monfils or Sebastian Baez.
