Holger Rune defeated Casper Ruud in a thrilling match at the Internazionali BNL d'Italia on Saturday, bringing him within one victory of winning his second ATP Masters 1000 crown.
In a hard-fought match, the Dane came back from falling behind by a break in the second set to defeat fourth seed Ruud 6-7(2), 6-4, 6-2 and record his 27th victory of the year.
In the quarterfinals, Rune overcame Novak Djokovic in his Rome debut. He improved to 1-4 in their ATP Head2Head series after following up that impressive victory with a solid striking display against Ruud. After two hours and 41 minutes, the 20-year-old outwitted Ruud in a sequence of exchanges by using strong groundstrokes and at times exquisite touch to progress.
