Sevilla defeated Roma on penalties in a boisterous Puskas Arena in Budapest to win their record-tying eighth Europa League championship. After a 1-1 draw and a missed penalty attempt by Roma's Roger Ibanez and Gianluca Mancini, Gonzalo Montiel, who had scored the winning penalty for Argentina in the World Cup final against France, duplicated the feat for the Spanish team.
Roma's Paulo Dybala had taken the lead in the first half when he raced onto Italy defender Mancini's sharp pass and skillfully steered a low effort past Sevilla keeper Yassine Bounou into the bottom right corner. After the break, Sevilla continued to press for a goal to equalise and did it 10 minutes later when Navas' cross from the right deflected off the unfortunate Mancini and into his own net.
The Spanish team has now won all seven of the competition's final matches, with captain Jesus Navas playing a role in their initial victory over Middlesbrough in 2006. Despite not placing in the top four in the most recent La Liga season, they managed to earn a spot in the Champions League for the following year.
