Taro Daniel will never forget this evening. On the centre court of the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presented by HSBC, Casper Ruud's final forehand into the net caused the 30-year-old Japanese player to fall to his knees and raise his arms in celebration.
After two hours and 58 minutes, the qualifier defeated World No. 4 Ruud 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(5) to advance to the quarterfinals in Acapulco. Daniel had defeated Novak Djokovic, the World No. 13, at Indian Wells in 2018, but had never defeated a Top 10 opponent before the event (previously 0-8). To advance to the semifinals, the righty from New York will compete against eighth seed Alex de Minaur.
