Taylor Fritz, 25, made a statement to the rest of the competition on Thursday at the Gonet Geneva Open when he defeated Ilya Ivashka 6-1, 6-2 in the ATP 250 clay-court quarterfinal match. In their first ATP Head2Head clash, Fritz easily defeated the World No. 86 Ivashka after struggling through a three-set struggle against Marcos Giron in their first match in Geneva.
The second seed broke his opponent's serve twice in each set while striking hard and with depth off both wings. He did not meet a break point on his own serve during the 51-minute match. Fritz reached his third tour-level clay-court semifinal of 2023 with his 29th tour-level triumph of the year.
The American will look to sustain his level in Geneva as he pursues his first ATP Tour championship match appearance on clay after losing in the final four at Monte-Carlo and Munich. Grigor Dimitrov or Christopher O'Connell, who square off in the second quarterfinal of the day on Thursday, will be in his way of reaching that goal.
