According to Patrice Motsepe, head of the Confederation of African Football (Caf), the development of the Africa Super League will fundamentally alter football on the continent. The 24-team club competition is expected to start in the 2023–24 season, with an overall prize pool of $100 million (£81.9 million) and $11.6 million going to the champion. A "Super Bowl-like" final will result from the format, which will see 197 matches contested between August and May.
The financial benefits that the Africa Super League will offer to clubs, member associations, and the Caf itself serve as its primary selling point. Motsepe officially announced the league on Wednesday at the Caf general meeting in Tanzania.
Africa will now have three continental club competitions thanks to the advent of the Super League: the African Super League, the African Champions League, and the Caf Confederation Cup. According to Motsepe, all three must coexist, with the two already-existing competitions reaping the benefits of the anticipated financial bonanza from the Super League. The Super League will feature players from 16 different nations, with play-offs being used for promotion and relegation.
