Venus Williams, a former World No. 1, competed in her first singles match in over a year on Monday night at the Citi Open, but Rebecca Marino, a Canadian qualifier, defeated the seven-time Grand Slam singles winner 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 after a 1 hour and 52 minute comeback.
The 42-year-old American great is currently unranked and has not competed in a singles match since losing to Hsieh Su-wei in the first round in Chicago in August of last year. Williams did not, however, enter the Citi Open with no prior experience in matches.
Williams and Jamie Murray competed in the Wimbledon mixed doubles, where they earned one victory and lost by a razor-thin margin in the second round.
