In the 2nd Test match between India and New Zealand, held on Saturday, 04th December 2021 at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Ajaz Patel became only the third bowler in Test history to take 10 wickets in a single inning.
Anil Kumble and former England off-spinner Jim Laker had previously achieved the milestone before Patel. In the 110th over, Ajaz Patel reached the historic milestone.
The spell by Ajaz Patel of 10/119 is now the third-best. In 1956, England off-spinner Jim Laker became the first bowler to take ten wickets in a Test against Australia at Old Trafford. The only other player to have done it is Anil Kumble, against Pakistan in 1999 at Feroz Shah Kotla in Delhi. Patel now holds the record for the best spell for New Zealand and the best figures against India in Test cricket.
Turning and keeping the ball straight with similar action and using the bounce surprised the Indian batting side, which kept losing wickets.
The Indian team ended up scoring 325/10 in their 1st inning of 2nd test match on a turning pitch, and while it can be achieved from the New Zealand batting side, it would not change the historic achievement of Ajaz Patel.
