In what seemed to be a thrilling fifth match of the inaugural Women's Premier League (WPL) 2023, Delhi Capitals faced off against UP Warriorz. Both teams were coming into the game with win in their last respective games.
The Delhi Capitals were able to put up 211 runs in 20 overs, which was just the start they required. In response, UP Warriorz's poor performance and inability to successfully chase down the target, Delhi won the match by a score of 42 runs.
Skipper Meg Lanning emerged as the standout player from the Delhi camp as she smashed 42-ball 70 after her side were invited to bat first. Jonassen scored an unbeaten 42 off 20 balls as Delhi piled a staggering 211-4 on the board. In response, UP made a decent start but continued to lose wickets often, only managing 169/5 in 20 overs. Tahila McGrath put up a strong fight, scoring an unbeaten 90 off 50 balls, the greatest individual total in the WPL to date. She, unfortunately, didn't find any backing from her teammates. After defeating Gujarat Titans in their previous match, this was UP's first loss in the WPL.
Brief scores: Delhi Capitals 211/4 in 20 overs (Meg Lanning 70, Jess Jonassen 42*; Shabnim Ismail 1/29) beat UP Warriorz 169/5 in 20 overs (Tahlia McGrath 90*; Jess Jonassen 3/43) by 42 runs
