For the first time in almost two decades, Barcelona is in danger of exiting the Champions League group stage, but new coach Xavi Hernandez is optimistic that his squad will advance to the knockout stage.
Barcelona's chances of making the last 16 have been affected after a goalless draw with Benfica at Camp Nou. To escape a group stage elimination for the first time in over two decades, he may now need to beat Bayern Munich.
Bayern has already qualified for the knockout stages after winning all five of their Group E matches. Barcelona is in second place with seven points from five games. With five points, Benfica is in third place.
Benfica will have a chance to advance to the knockout stages if they beat Dynamo Kiev in the final match and Barcelona fails to win. Benfica hasn't qualified for the knockout stages since 2016-17.
"We can beat Bayern in Munich," Xavi said.
Barcelona would have advanced to the knockout stages for the 18th straight season if they had defeated Benfica, but they did not take advantage of their opportunity.
Bayern Munich won their sixth successive group match on Tuesday, defeating Dynamo 2-1. Dynamo has only one point from five games and is already out of the knockout stages.
