Ons Jabeur advanced to the quarterfinals of the Sydney Tennis Classic by defeating two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova 6-4, 6-4 on Wednesday.
In a confident effort, seventh-seeded Jabeur hit five aces and won 76 percent of first-serve points in 82 minutes to advance to the last eight and face No. 7-ranked Anett Kontaveit.
“I’ve been working a lot on myself and my mentality,” said Jabeur, “Everyone knows if I decide to do something then I do it, and I am going with that mentality from now on.”
With a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania, Kontaviet advanced to the quarterfinals.
Garbine Muguruza defeated Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-1, 7-6 (4) in the second set to advance to the quarterfinals, where she will face Daria Kasatkina.
Kasatkina, ranked No. 26, followed up her win over Sofia Kenin, the 2020 Australian Open winner, with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Elise Mertens. Belinda Bencic, the Olympic winner, was scheduled to face Oceane Dodin later Wednesday.
Top-seeded Aslan Karatsev defeated Miomir Kecmanovic 7-5, 6-4 in the men's draw, while American Brandon Nakashima defeated seventh-seeded Fabio Fognini 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6) in little under two hours.
Marin Cilic defeated Jaume Munar 7-6 (6), 6-2 in the second round of the Adelaide International. Karin Khachanov, the third seed, defeated Gianluca Mager 7-5, 6-3.
