For Brandon Nakashima, the third attempt is the charm. When he triumphed at the San Diego Open on Sunday, the 21-year-old capped off a magical week in his hometown.
In an all-American final, the San Diego native upset third seed Marcos Giron 6-4, 6-4 while competing in his third ATP Tour final and first of 2022. With Giron also coming from Southern California and having spent some time in San Diego recently, it was a perfect conclusion to the ATP 250 tournament.
Nakashima is poised to achieve a new career high after climbing 21 spots this week to No. 48 in the Pepperstone ATP Live Rankings. As he attempts to qualify for the Intesa Sanpaolo Next Gen ATP Finals, the American also strengthened his position in the Pepperstone ATP Live Race to Milan, climbing one spot to sixth. At the season-ending showcase the previous year, Nakashima advanced to the semifinals.
