Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz returns to defend his first ATP Tour championship in Plava Laguna Croatia Open Umag. Alcaraz defeated Norbert Gombos quickly on Thursday in the ATP 250 clay-court match in Croatia. The score was 6-2, 6-3.
The World No. 117 Gombos put Alcaraz to the test on his own serve despite the clear-cut outcome. The Spaniard advanced to his eighth quarterfinal of the year by surviving seven break points and converting four of his own 12 possibilities.
Alcaraz has won four more tour-level championships since defeating Richard Gasquet in Umag last year, including ATP Masters 1000 titles at the Miami Open presented by Itau and the Mutua Madrid Open. He has also climbed to a career-high No. 5 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings.
