Designed by Fenwick Iribarren Architects in Qatar ahead of the FIFA 2022 World Cup, Stadium 974 consists of colourful shipping containers and a modular steel structure.
In FIFA World Cup history, it is the first stadium designed to be fully demountable. The 40,000-seat venue near Doha's port was formerly known as Ras Abu Aboud.
Fenwick Iribarren Architects designed the stadium with structural engineers Schlaich Bergermann Partner and engineering consultancy Hilson Moran.
Modules are made from recycled shipping containers and steel structures.
This stadium will be dismantled and reassembled in a new location after the football tournament in 2022, or it will be repurposed as a series of smaller venues.
By utilizing a modular design, organizers reduced construction costs, build time, and material waste, and water efficiency methods will reduce water consumption by 40 percent compared to a traditional stadium.
During its construction, 974 shipping containers were used to construct Stadium 974. 974 is also the country's international calling code.
Qatar's maritime history and the industrial heritage of the site are reflected in the shipping containers, which were often used for transporting construction materials to the site.
Some of these steel containers form the exterior of the stadium, including staircases, concession stands, and restrooms.
FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022's Supreme Committee has designated Stadium 974 by Fenwick Iribarren Architects to achieve the five-star rating in the Global Sustainability Assessment System (GSAS) for both its design and construction.
Green building and infrastructure are rated by GSAS across the Middle East and North Africa. Structures can be certified for their design, construction, and operation, with six stars being the highest rating.
Due to the stadium's shape and gaps between the seats, natural ventilation is not required. It also helps that the stadium is near the sea.
On 30 November, the stadium will host its first match. Fenwick Iribarren Architects also designed the Education City Stadium for the tournament. Al Thumama Stadium was built by Ibrahim M Jaidah.
In addition to its proximity to the Hamad International Airport, Stadium 974 is the only stadium situated close to the sea and the first stadium football fans will see when they arrive in Qatar for the tournament.
