On Thursday, Nick Kyrgios easily defeated follow-up Australian Alex de Minaur in Montreal one day after defeating World No. 1 Daniil Medvedev. The Washington winner took flight early in his 6-2, 6-3 victory, dominating his opponent to win the opening four games in only 11 minutes. The match was moved from Court Central owing to afternoon rain, and Kyrgios quickly established the tone on Court Rogers by winning 17 of the first 21 points with his forehand.
Kyrgios broke first in the second set to take the lead after capping the 23-minute opening set with two serve-and-volley victories. Kyrgios was stunned as De Minaur, on his first opportunity of the game, found his footing to break back. However, Kyrgios vented his annoyance with a thunderous forehand return to start the game at 1-1, then displayed outstanding patience in several lengthy rallies to quickly regain the upper hand.
Kyrgios played four more points of brilliant baseline play after failing to serve out the match at 5-2 in order to break at love and win in just over an hour. The Australian, who was playing his eighth singles match in 10 days going back to his Washington debut, would appreciate the quick victory.
