IPL 2021: Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the captain of Chennai Super Kings, has announced that he would play in the Indian Premier League next season. Everything, according to Dhoni, will be determined by the regulations governing the IPL super auction, which will take place ahead of the 2022 season.
Dhoni said it's not a guarantee that he'll remain with the club with whom he's been linked since the T20 league's start in 2008. He was speaking during the toss of CSK's IPL 2021 match against Punjab Kings on Thursday. When asked about his future by commentator Danny Morrison, Dhoni joked, "Well, you can see me in yellow next year."
He then added, -But whether I will be playing for CSK- There are a lot of uncertainties around it for a simple reason that we have two new teams coming up. We don-t know the retention policy. We don-t know how many foreigners, Indian players we can retain, the money cap that every player will be cutting from the kitty. So there are a lot of uncertainties."
With the BCCI poised to announce the inclusion of two more clubs, bringing the IPL to ten teams in 2022, a mega auction will be placed to allow all franchisees to rebuild their squads. "You can't truly decide that until the regulations are in place. So we'll wait and see what happens, and hopefully, it'll be beneficial to everyone," Dhoni added.
Dhoni, 40, has led CSK to three IPL championships, the second-most in the league's 14-year existence. He declared his retirement from live international cricket last year, although he continues to play in the Indian Premier League.
