Tennis Updates Today: Serena Williams recently spoke with an online women's magazine, about her sleep pattern and beauty routine. Williams also discussed her favourite sleep routines and how she manages her frequent migraines throughout the conversation.
During tournaments, the American tries to obtain eight hours of sleep, but admits to being a "night owl." She does, however, go to bed by 12 a.m. at the very latest.
"My sleep schedule typically doesn-t change much even if I-m in the middle of a tournament," Williams said. "I always strive to get eight hours, but I-m definitely a bit of a night owl. I typically go to sleep around 11 p.m.. or midnight so I can get my eight hours in. However, I know sleep is extremely important to help the body heal, so I always try to get eight hours of sleep."
The 40-year-old then said that she suffers from migraines at least twice a month. Williams had been having these episodes since she was a youngster, but it wasn't until she was in her twenties that she recognised they weren't just headaches.
Her eyes become excessively sensitive to light, according to the 23-time Slam champion, which is a key indicator of migraine for her.
"I've dealt with them my entire adult life and typically get about two migraine attacks per month," Serena Williams said. "When I was younger, I would complain to my mom that I had a headache. It wasn-t until my 20s that I realized that I actually had migraine attacks."
"I would even have to stop training because of my migraine attacks," she added. "Aside from head pain, my eyes get very sensitive to light, which is my number one symptom and how I know I have a migraine. It makes it hard for me to function."
Serena Williams continued by emphasising the importance of staying hydrated. The American always has a water bottle by her bedside and avoids eating snacks since the sugar content will keep her up for longer.
"Hydration is super important for everything from skin to muscle recovery, so I try to make sure I always have water next to my bed," Williams said. "I also avoid snacking, especially sugar, as that tends to keep me awake longer."
"It's as though I'm in heaven!" Serena Williams on sleeping in silk pyjamas
Serena Williams also mentioned how much she enjoys going to bed in her silk PJs. She described the sensation as "heavenly," before adding that she enjoys using eye and face masks before going to bed.
Williams stressed the importance of her skin-care routine, which she claims helps her relax before going to bed. She claims she removes her makeup with coconut oil before washing her skin with serums and creams
