At Buffalo Park in East London on Saturday (January 21), South Africa defeated West Indies by a comfortable margin of 44 runs, powered by Marizanne Kapp's half-century and Masabata Klaas' four wicket haul.
When South Africa decided to bat, Anneke Bosch was gone early. However, Kapp stabilized the innings alongside Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus, putting together 31- and 63-run stands for the second and third wickets, respectively. The all-rounder scored 52 off 43 balls while smashing five boundaries.
The hosts managed to put up a competitive 141 for 5, a total that proved too much for West Indies.
Britney Cooper and Hayley Matthews got the chase off to a cautious but solid start, putting on a 32-run partnership for the first wicket before the latter was bowled in the penultimate delivery of the powerplay. West Indies was never able to recover from the collapse caused by the dismissal.
Following his maiden wicket, Klaas also got rid of Matthews, Shabika Gajnabi, and Afy Fletcher. While limiting West Indies to 97 for 8, Nonkululeko Mlaba and Ayabonga Khaka both took a wicket and controlled the run rate, allowing only 21 runs in their eight combined overs.
Brief Scores: South Africa 141 for 5 in 20 overs (Marizanne Kapp 52, Sune Luus 30; Shamilia Connell 2-17) beat West Indies 97 for 8 in 20 overs (Hayley Matthews 23; Masabata Klaas 4-21) by 44 runs.
