Joe Root became the latest Test cricketer to reach the milestone of 10,000 runs on Day 4 of the first Test against New Zealand on Sunday. Root became only the second Englishman, after Alastair Cook, to reach the milestone, and the 14th overall. In his 218th innings, he became the fastest England hitter to achieve the 10,000-run mark. In his 229th innings, Cook had attained the milestone. Root, along with Cook, is the joint-youngest player to accomplish the milestone, both having done so at the age of 31y 157d.
In the Lord's Test, Root hit an unbroken 115 to help England win by five wickets and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
As they chased down 277 at Lord's to earn a win in Ben Stokes' maiden match as England's Test captain, his brilliant century saved them from a score of 69/4.
