New Zealand beat India by seven wickets and 17 balls to spare in the first ODI.
India arrived in Auckland with high expectations after winning the three-match T20I series, but their strategies failed in the opening ODI.
Batting first, India had reached 306 for 7 in their 50 overs thanks to Shreyas Iyer's 80 and the half-centuries by openers Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan. However, because to the relatively flat track and lack of support for the fast bowlers, India fell short by 30 to 40 runs, and the absence of the sixth bowler also contributed to their defeat.
While chasing target of 307 runs, the unbroken 221-run partnership between Tom Latham and Kane Williamson for the fourth wicket turned out to be a crucial element. Williamson provided support with an unbeaten 94 while Latham was the star with an unbeaten 145 as the Kiwis defeated the opposition by seven wickets with 2.5 overs remaining.
Brief scores: India 306/7 in 50 overs (Shreyas Iyer 80, Shikhar Dhawan 72; Lockie Ferguson 3/59) vs New Zealand 309/3 in 47.1 overs (Tom Latham 145*, Kane Williamson 94*; Umran Malik 2/66)
